Ranchi is planning to install high-speed traffic cameras at around 40 accident-prone locations across the city to improve road safety and curb traffic violations. The proposed project, estimated to cost over INR 5 crore, is currently at a preliminary stage, with authorities finalising locations such as major flyovers, Ring Road stretches and busy corridors. The move will expand the existing surveillance network, which covers about 10 key junctions. The cameras will automatically detect overspeeding and signal violations, enabling real-time challan generation and reducing manual enforcement. Officials believe the technology-led approach will improve road discipline, deter risky driving and help reduce accidents once approvals and funding are in place.

The expansion would build on the city's existing traffic surveillance setup, which currently operates cameras at around 10 critical intersections and corridors. The high-speed cameras are expected to capture violations such as overspeeding and signal breaches in real time, enabling automated challan generation and reducing the reliance on manual enforcement.
Officials have indicated that this technology-driven approach is intended to improve road discipline by serving both as a deterrent and an enforcement tool. Motorists in Ranchi have largely welcomed the move, noting that many drivers tend to overspeed on wide roads and flyovers due to limited monitoring.
While the proposal has been identified and preliminary cost estimates prepared, authorities emphasise that funding approval and detailed planning are still pending before installations can proceed. Enhanced surveillance is seen as a key step towards modernising the city's traffic management infrastructure and curbing accidents at locations with a history of high-risk driving behaviour.
