Synopsis

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable waste management with compost produced from the city's wet waste receiving the Maharashtra government's state-registered Harit MahaCity Compost brand. The recognition authorises NMMC to market and sell its organic manure under an official green label that complies with state waste management rules and Fertiliser Control Order (FCO) standards. Developed to promote compost derived from urban wet waste, the brand reinforces Navi Mumbai's standing in the Super Swachh League of India's cleanest cities. The initiative supports landfill reduction, soil enrichment and sustainable agriculture, while strengthening the city's circular economy framework.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has added another notable achievement to its solid waste management efforts, with compost produced from the city's wet waste being granted the Maharashtra government's official and state-registered Harit MahaCity Compost brand. This recognition enables the civic body to market and sell its organic manure under a certified green label, offering a distinct and quality-assured identity to compost generated through scientific waste processing.

The Harit MahaCity Compost brand has been developed by the state's Urban Development Department to promote and market organic fertiliser produced from urban wet waste. The brand strictly adheres to quality standards prescribed under state waste management rules and the Fertiliser Control Order (FCO). Compost generated at NMMC's solid waste management facilities has met these benchmarks, qualifying it for branding under this recognised green label.

With this approval, compost produced from wet waste and biodegradable leaf litter in Navi Mumbai will now be officially identified and sold as Harit MahaCity Compost. The development further strengthens Navi Mumbai's credentials as one of India's top clean cities, included in the Super Swachh League, under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde.

The initiative is expected to significantly reduce the volume of waste being sent to dumping grounds, while promoting the productive reuse of biodegradable waste. The high-quality organic manure enhances soil fertility, improves plant health and supports environmentally sustainable farming practices.

At the Turbhe dumping ground-based solid waste processing facility, NMMC processes municipal solid waste using scientific methods, producing an average of 30 to 40 metric tonnes of organic compost. This compost is used extensively in municipal gardens across Navi Mumbai and is also made available for sale to farmers, offering them access to eco-friendly and quality fertiliser.

Through consistent efforts in environmental conservation, waste management and sustainable development, NMMC continues to advance a circular economy approach. The official branding of its compost as Harit MahaCity Compost is a moment of pride for the civic body and a significant step towards greener urban living.
