Synopsis

Maharashtra is preparing to allocate around INR 6,000 crore to acquire land for the Purandar airport near Pune, with the state administration finalising approvals. Compensation proposals include INR 1 crore per acre, extra for on-site assets, fruit-bearing trees, and 10% developed land. Several farmers have rejected this, requesting higher compensation and a larger share of developed land. Officials are planning a meeting with the Chief Minister to address demands. Landowners of nearly 95% of the area have consented, helping move the project forward while discussions continue.

The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is set to allocate approximately INR 6,000 crore to acquire land for the proposed Purandar airport near Pune. The state government has received a detailed proposal from the Pune district administration, which is now in the final stages of administrative clearance to ensure smooth land procurement.

Under the government's earlier notifications, compensation to landowners includes INR 1 crore per acre, double compensation for on-site assets such as houses, wells, and pipelines, payment for fruit-bearing trees, and 10% developed land in return for the acquired plots. Several affected farmers, however, have rejected the proposed compensation, arguing for a rate between INR 3 crore and INR 3.4 crore per acre and a higher share of developed land, similar to arrangements in other major infrastructure projects such as the Pune ring road and Navi Mumbai airport.

The airport project requires acquisition across seven villages covering roughly 1,285 hectares (about 3,000 acres). Officials report that landowners representing nearly 1,245 hectares have already provided consent, while approvals for the remaining plots are still under negotiation. To resolve pending issues and finalise compensation terms, the administration is planning a meeting between farmer representatives and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, where village-level representatives will present their demands.

Farmers requests include higher land rates, more developed land, income tax relief, stamp duty concessions, certification for project-affected individuals, employment opportunities, and educational fee support. Land measurement for the project had been completed earlier, but the acquisition process experienced minor delays due to ongoing consultations. Officials emphasise that the upcoming discussions with the Chief Minister are crucial for bridging differences and expediting the project. Once completed, the airport is expected to improve regional infrastructure and connectivity significantly.
