Synopsis

The Capital Region Development Authority has approved investments of over INR 1,300 crore for developing layouts and strengthening core infrastructure in Amaravati. The approvals cover layout works in the land pooling zones, a major flood pumping station, a quantum computing research facility, upgrades to residential buildings for senior officers, and additional institutional construction. The authority has also decided to set up a committee to resolve land classification issues involving 202 acres. The decisions signal a renewed focus on planned and time-bound capital development.

The Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) has approved projects worth more than INR 1,300 crore to accelerate infrastructure development in Amaravati. The decisions were taken at a recent CRDA meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shri N Chandrababu Naidu, marking another step in reviving long-pending capital city works.

A major portion of the approval relates to the development of layouts in Zone-8 of the Land Pooling Scheme area. The authority cleared funds exceeding INR 1,300 crore to create internal roads, drainage, water supply, power networks and other basic amenities in these layouts. These works are intended to support plots returned to farmers who had pooled land for the capital city project and to make the areas ready for habitation and future construction.

Alongside layout development, the CRDA sanctioned nearly INR 444 crore for the construction of a flood pumping station with a handling capacity of 8,400 cusecs. The project is aimed at managing excess rainwater and preventing flooding in low-lying parts of Amaravati, an issue that has affected construction activity during heavy monsoon periods in the past.

The authority also approved INR 104 crore for setting up a research facility at the Amaravati Quantum Computing Centre. The proposed centre will come up on a two-acre site and is expected to support advanced research and innovation, aligning with the state's earlier plans to position Amaravati as a technology-driven administrative capital.

In another decision, around INR 109 crore was cleared for improving facilities in residential buildings being developed for All India Service officers. These upgrades are meant to ensure adequate living infrastructure for senior officials who are expected to be based in the capital as administrative functions expand.

Separate approval was given for constructing additional buildings on 23 acres of land at Sakhamuru village for projects under the Ayush Ministry. The move is part of the broader plan to allocate institutional land for central and state government functions within the capital region.

The CRDA also decided to form a state-level committee to examine and classify 202 acres of remaining land in the Amaravati area. The classification has been pending for some time and is considered important for future planning and land use decisions.

Amaravati was originally planned as a greenfield capital through a large land pooling exercise involving farmers from several villages. While development slowed in previous years due to policy uncertainty, the recent approvals indicate a steady attempt to restart infrastructure work in a phased and structured manner.
