Synopsis

Uttarakhand's Public Works Department (PWD) plans to strengthen 235 bridges across nine districts on state highways at an estimated cost of INR 1,640 crore, with work scheduled to start in July 2026. The project, supported by the Asian Development Bank, aims to raise load bearing capacity to class A for heavier civilian and defense traffic, widen narrow bridges, and address landslide prone stretches. Out of 585 bridges assessed, only 111 currently meet class A standards. The initiative also focuses on key strategic, tourist, and pilgrimage routes, enhancing safety, resilience, and connectivity.

The Public Works Department of Uttarakhand has announced plans to upgrade 235 bridges on state highways at a cost of INR 1,640 crore. The work, scheduled to begin in July 2026, will be supported by funding from the Asian Development Bank. The initiative covers nine districts and includes strengthening existing bridges, widening narrow structures, and treating landslide prone stretches along seven major routes.

Out of 585 bridges on 103 state highways, only 111 currently meet class A loading standards, which allow for heavier loads. Most other bridges fall under class B, limiting the weight they can safely carry. The upgrades will ensure that all selected bridges can handle modern traffic demands, including large commercial vehicles and heavy defense transport.

Officials have noted that the bridges, many of which are 20 to 40 years old, have been under pressure due to rising traffic, tourism and local commercial movement. This has resulted in the need for structural reinforcement and widening in certain areas to improve traffic flow and road safety. Further, some bridges in the border areas require higher load capacity to support Army vehicles, tanks, and trucks.

The programme also ensures that bridge specifications meet current Indian Road Congress and Indian Standards requirements. This alignment will improve long-term resilience, reduce structural strain, and provide safer and more reliable connectivity across Uttarakhand's hilly terrain.
