State-owned NHPC is set to begin commercial operations of the second 250 MW unit of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, taking a key step forward in India's largest hydropower development. Being developed at an estimated cost of around INR 27,000 crore on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, the 2,000 MW run-of-river project is a critical addition to the country's renewable energy capacity. The commissioning of the second unit marks steady progress in the phased operationalisation of the project.
NHPC will commence commercial operations of the second unit of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project in the coming week, advancing the rollout of India's largest hydropower project. The unit has an installed capacity of 250 MW and forms part of the 2,000 MW project being developed at an estimated investment of around INR 27,000 crore.
The Subansiri Lower project is being constructed near North Lakhimpur, along the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, and comprises eight units of 250 MW each. Designed as a run-of-river scheme with water storage on the Subansiri river, the project is expected to play a significant role in strengthening renewable energy generation in the northeastern region.
According to the company, commercial operations of the second unit will begin from midnight, marking another milestone in the phased commissioning of the project. Once fully operational, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is expected to substantially enhance hydropower capacity and improve power availability across multiple states, supporting India's broader clean energy and grid stability objectives.
