Dense fog caused major disruption at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, leading to the cancellation of 79 flights, including international services. Over 230 flights were delayed, with departures facing an average delay of nearly 49 minutes, according to flight tracking data. The airport operator said operations were continuing under CAT III conditions, allowing landings and take-offs despite low visibility. Ground staff were deployed across terminals to assist passengers. The incident highlights recurring winter challenges for flight operations in north India, even with advanced navigation systems in place.
Flight operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport were hit by dense fog, leading to widespread disruption across domestic and international services. As visibility dropped sharply, airlines were forced to cancel 79 flights, including several international connections, according to an official familiar with the situation.
Apart from cancellations, delays affected a large number of passengers. Data from flight tracking platform Flightradar24 showed that more than 230 flights were delayed, with departures facing an average delay of about 49 minutes during the morning hours. The disruption added pressure to peak travel movements at the airport.
The airport operator, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), said flight movements were continuing under CAT III conditions due to persistent fog. It explained that while both arrivals and departures were operational, passengers could face delays or disruptions depending on weather conditions and airline readiness.
DIAL, which manages the country's busiest airport handling around 1,300 flights daily, said its ground staff were coordinating with airlines and other stakeholders to assist travellers. Support teams were deployed across terminals to manage passenger movement and provide necessary help as weather conditions continued to affect schedules.
Fog-related disruptions are common during winter months in north India, often impacting flight punctuality despite advanced landing systems. Airlines typically adjust schedules and deploy trained crew during such periods, but sustained low visibility can still result in cancellations to ensure safety.
