Mumbai's civic body has issued a show-cause notice to the contractor handling the ready-mix concrete operations at the Metro Line 2B project site in Bandra East for repeatedly failing to follow air pollution mitigation norms laid out in earlier guidelines. Earlier inspections had shown non-compliance despite prior directives to fix the issues. The contractor has been given a short deadline to respond, with the possibility of work being stopped if compliance is not demonstrated. The action reflects broader concerns over construction-related pollution across major infrastructure projects in the city, where enforcement has recently intensified.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sent a show-cause notice to J Kumar Infraprojects, the contractor running the ready-mix concrete (RMC) plant at the Metro Line 2B construction site in Bandra East, for failing to adhere to air pollution control requirements. This notice follows inspection findings that the contractor had not complied with environmental protection directives issued earlier, despite clear instructions to do so.
Officials from the BMC's air pollution mitigation squad had visited the Metro Line 2B site in early December and documented lapses in pollution control measures that had been flagged in civic circulars issued previously. These included steps meant to reduce dust and particulate emissions during construction activity. The contractor was required to submit a report on corrective actions but did not do so, and a follow-up inspection showed the issues remained unresolved.
The show-cause notice urges the contractor to explain the reasons for non-compliance within three days of receiving the notice. The civic body has made it clear that, without a satisfactory response and evidence of corrective action, it may consider stopping construction work at the site.
This is not the first time that Metro 2B project sites have faced enforcement action over pollution control. In the past, similar notices and even stop-work orders have been issued at construction yards linked to this corridor for not meeting environmental norms. These steps come amid broader efforts by the municipal authorities to control air pollution from large infrastructure projects across the city, where several other sites have also been found in breach of mitigation norms.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is overseeing the Metro 2B project, has not publicly confirmed the pollution findings but has previously stated that environmental standards are being monitored as part of overall project management. The notice highlights ongoing tension between rapid infrastructure delivery and adherence to environmental safeguards in a densely populated city.
