Members of the Rajya Sabha recently raised serious concerns over rail safety, connectivity gaps and delays in project execution across several states. Lawmakers highlighted structural defects in a rail overbridge on the Narmadapuram Itarsi section, calling for strict action and proper reconstruction. They also pressed for extending premium train services, completing long-pending rail lines, and improving station infrastructure. Delays in operationalising a regional rapid transit corridor were questioned as well. The discussion reflected growing concern over safety standards and the slow pace of rail infrastructure delivery.
Concerns over rail safety and infrastructure quality were raised in the Rajya Sabha during a recent discussion on railway operations and development. Several members pointed to serious structural issues found in a rail overbridge on the Narmadapuram Itarsi section in Madhya Pradesh. According to the issues highlighted, inspections revealed deep cracks and crumbling concrete, creating safety risks for passengers and vehicles using the stretch. Members urged that responsibility be fixed on the contractor and officials involved and stressed that the bridge should be rebuilt properly rather than repaired temporarily.
The discussion also focused on the need for better rail connectivity in different regions. A member from Kerala sought the extension of an existing Vande Bharat Express service to cover additional destinations in the state, noting that the current route forces passengers, including students and elderly travellers, to depend on multiple train changes and long waiting periods. Improving direct connectivity was flagged as essential for daily commuters and long-distance travellers.
From Odisha, a member highlighted delays in several sanctioned railway projects, particularly new lines and doubling works in the southern part of the state. Despite approvals being in place for years, slow execution has affected freight movement and passenger services. The members called for time-bound completion of these projects and better coordination between railway zones and state authorities.
Another concern raised related to the delayed operational launch of a regional rapid transit system corridor, despite trial runs having been conducted earlier. The member from Uttar Pradesh questioned why passenger services had not yet started and sought clarity on timelines, pointing out that such delays reduce the intended benefits of urban and regional mobility projects.
In addition, issues around station redevelopment and planning of industrial areas linked to rail connectivity were discussed. Members noted that poor planning and slow upgrades affect small and medium enterprises that depend on efficient rail movement for goods and workforce mobility.
