The Indore Metro project has revised its alignment, with the stretch between Khajrana Square and the airport now planned entirely underground. The total project cost has risen from INR7,500.80 crore to INR12,088 crore, with the state government covering around INR800-900 crore of additional underground construction expenses. The full corridor remains 31.32 km, including 7 underground and 21 elevated stations. Authorities cited commuter convenience and traffic management as reasons for the change. The underground design aims to reduce urban disruption while improving connectivity and travel efficiency.
The Indore Metro Rail project has undergone a key change in alignment, with the section between Khajrana Square and the airport now set to be constructed entirely underground. Officials said the decision follows extensive planning reviews, which highlighted concerns regarding traffic integration and commuter convenience along the previously planned partially elevated route.
Chief Minister Shri Mohan Yadav confirmed that the underground portion will cover approximately 8.7 km and include seven stations. The revised design is expected to reduce surface disruption in dense urban areas and provide a smoother transit experience for passengers. The remaining 22.62 km stretch of the metro will be largely elevated, featuring 21 stations.
The change has resulted in a substantial increase in project costs. Earlier estimates had placed the total project value at INR7,500.80 crore, but with the additional underground construction, the overall cost has risen to INR12,088 crore. The state government will fund approximately INR800-900 crore of this additional expenditure. Authorities emphasized that this investment is necessary to ensure long-term efficiency and safety for commuters.
Originally, the underground section was planned only from the railway station to the airport, but evolving concerns over city traffic and commuter convenience led to the expanded underground alignment. The decision also aligns with wider urban planning efforts to modernize Indore's public transport network and address increasing population density along major corridors.
Urban planners noted that the fully underground airport corridor could help streamline travel times while minimizing traffic congestion on city roads. Officials added that the new design will incorporate advanced safety and accessibility features at all stations, reflecting global metro standards. Construction is expected to progress in phases, with authorities prioritizing minimal disruption to existing traffic and local communities.
