The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has approved the Dagadarthi Greenfield Airport project in Nellore district, marking the state's eighth airport and a major boost to regional infrastructure. Strategically located near national highways, Krishnapatnam and Ramayapatnam ports, and key industrial zones, the airport will strengthen air, road, and port connectivity. Developed on 1,332 acres through a public-private partnership, Phase 1 will handle 1.4 million passengers annually, with scope to expand to 15 million. The plan includes a cargo terminal to support manufacturing, agriculture, and exports. The project is expected to drive demand for industrial land, logistics parks, hospitality, and residential development, supporting aviation-led economic and real estate growth in southern Andhra Pradesh.
In a move aimed at strengthening aviation-led and industrial infrastructure, the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has approved the Dagadarthi Greenfield Airport project in Nellore district. Officials said the project aligns with the state's broader objective of developing a future-ready, multimodal ecosystem that integrates air connectivity with ports, highways, and industrial zones. The Dagadarthi airport is strategically located with access to key National Highway corridors and close proximity to major ports, including Krishnapatnam Port and Ramayapatnam Port. It is also near established and upcoming industrial clusters such as KRIS City and IFFCO special economic zones.
The project has already received in-principle approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. The state has issued a Request for Proposal to invite private players for the development, operation, and maintenance of the airport under a long-term concession model. This approach is expected to bring private investment and operational expertise into the project.
The airport will be developed in phases over a total land area of 1,332.80 acres. Phase 1 is designed to handle 1.4 million passengers per annum. As demand grows, the facility can be expanded in stages to handle up to 15 million passengers annually in the long term. The approved master plan also includes provisions for a dedicated cargo terminal to support freight movement linked to industrial and port-led trade activity in the region.
Officials said the planned cargo infrastructure will support sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and exports, particularly given Nellore's proximity to ports and industrial zones. Improved air cargo connectivity is expected to reduce transit time and logistics costs for exporters and agri-produce handlers.
Beyond aviation, the Dagadarthi Greenfield Airport is expected to act as a trigger for regional development. Improved connectivity typically leads to increased demand for industrial land, logistics parks, warehousing facilities, hospitality projects, and residential developments in surrounding areas. The project is also expected to generate employment across construction, airport operations, logistics, and ancillary services.
By integrating air transport with road and port infrastructure, the state aims to create a seamless logistics network that supports both domestic and international trade. Officials said this connectivity will make southern Andhra Pradesh more attractive for industrial investment and services-led growth.
With the Cabinet's approval of the Dagadarthi project, Andhra Pradesh continues to advance its infrastructure pipeline with a focus on scale and timely execution. The airport is expected to play a key role in improving regional accessibility, supporting industrial expansion, and strengthening the state's position as a competitive destination for investment and economic activity.
