Synopsis

Pune's proposed Yerawada Katraj underground tunnel project has progressed with the completion of a pre-feasibility report by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The report will be submitted to the Pune Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority after the model code of conduct is lifted. The project is aimed at easing traffic congestion through a north south underground corridor. While initial feedback from the state government has been encouraging, decisions on alignment, costs, execution and funding will depend on further evaluations and approvals in the next stage.

The Yerawada Katraj underground tunnel project in Pune has moved a step closer to formal evaluation with the preparation of a pre-feasibility report by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The report is expected to be placed before the Pune Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (PUMTA) once the model code of conduct linked to local body elections is lifted.

The proposed tunnel is planned as a north south underground road corridor connecting Yerawada in eastern Pune to Katraj in the southern part of the city. The project is intended to divert a portion of vehicular traffic underground to reduce congestion on some of Pune's busiest surface roads, where widening options have become increasingly limited due to dense development.

State authorities have indicated support for underground transport solutions, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stating that such corridors are necessary for cities like Pune where surface expansion is no longer practical. Officials involved in the planning process said the pre-feasibility findings were shared with senior government representatives and received a positive response at the initial level.

The Yerawada Katraj tunnel is part of a larger concept for a 54-km underground road network across Pune. The estimated cost for the entire underground network is around INR 32,000 crore, though officials have clarified that the Yerawada Katraj stretch will be evaluated independently in the next phase. Detailed cost estimates, alignment plans, construction methodology and timelines are yet to be finalised.

Earlier, the proposal had faced reservations from the Pune Municipal Corporation, which raised concerns about technical complexity, financial viability and the absence of detailed studies. Those concerns prompted the need for a structured pre-feasibility assessment to establish traffic benefits, engineering practicality and broader urban impact.

Once reviewed by PUMTA, the project will require state government approval before moving toward a full feasibility study and funding decisions. Authorities have maintained that no execution timelines will be announced until all technical and financial evaluations are completed.
