The Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bus Terminal (BSABT) at Baramunda in Bhubaneswar is being developed into a combined transport and business hub. The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has planned to lease around 60,000 sq ft across two floors to the Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC), which will allocate space to IT and ITeS companies. The move builds on earlier efforts to allot 112 shops via lottery, providing air conditioned commercial spaces for vendors. Officials expect this integration to boost footfall, enhance economic activity, and expand the terminal's role beyond transportation.
The Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bus Terminal (BSABT) at Baramunda in Bhubaneswar is being transformed into a combined transport and business hub by including IT and ITeS companies alongside its transport operations. The Housing and Urban Development Minister and chairman of the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) announced the plan during a recent function at the terminal, where keys to shops were handed over to beneficiaries.
To facilitate IT operations, the BDA will lease approximately 60,000 sq ft of space across two floors to the Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC). The OCAC will further allocate the space to technology firms. Officials believe that having IT companies operate from the terminal will not only increase foot traffic but also create a more vibrant environment for commuters and vendors alike.
The initiative complements previous plans to allot 112 commercial shops inside the terminal through a lottery system conducted after a detailed survey by the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC). These shops, now provided with modern air conditioned facilities, replace the informal stalls that many vendors had previously operated outside the old terminal.
In addition, authorities have earlier proposed setting up a global visa application centre at BSABT, which would further add to the range of services available at the terminal. With these developments, the terminal is expected to serve as a model for integrating commercial activity with public transport infrastructure.
Spread across 11 acres, BSABT is one of Odisha's largest bus terminals and handles a high volume of buses and passengers daily. The terminal already offers modern amenities such as lifts, escalators, and other commuter services, which will now complement the added commercial and IT spaces. Officials expect that these combined facilities will enhance the overall experience for both passengers and visitors, while supporting local vendors and small businesses.
