Synopsis

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi to seek approvals for key national highway projects aimed at improving connectivity, safety, and economic activity in the state. Proposed works include the four lane Rishikesh Bypass, widening of Almora Danya Panar Ghat route, and realignment of Jyolikot Khairna Gairsain Karnprayag corridor. The state also reviewed ongoing projects under Char Dham Mahamarg worth INR 12,769 crore and other strategic corridors. Officials assured timely consideration, with several new tunnels, bypasses, and elevated stretches planned to improve traffic flow and environmental safety.

Uttarakhand's road infrastructure development was discussed in a high level meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, where Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami presented proposals for major national highway projects. Dhami emphasized the importance of better road connectivity for tourism, trade, border security, and disaster management. He pointed out that the state has made steady progress under central support and has been focusing on fast tracking crucial infrastructure projects.

Dhami detailed several proposals, including the four lane Rishikesh Bypass on National Highway 07, spanning 12.7 km with an estimated cost of INR 1,161.27 crore. The plan includes elevated stretches to protect elephant corridors, a bridge over the Chandrabhaga River, and road over bridges to ease traffic flow. Other key proposals included widening the Almora Danya Panar Ghat route on NH 309B and realignment of the 235 km Jyolikot Khairna Gairsain Karnprayag route on NH 109, with costs running into hundreds of crore. Work on Almora Bageshwar Kanda Udiyari Bend road on NH 309A was also reviewed, with forest land clearance already granted for parts of the route.

The state's national highway network now spans approximately 3,723 km, of which 597 km have been designed and executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Around 336 km are already completed, and 193 km are under construction, with total project costs exceeding INR 15,890 crore. Corridors connecting major urban and industrial hubs, such as Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Rudrapur, Kashipur, Haldwani, and Kathgodam, have been widened and upgraded to four lanes. Key corridors like Kashipur Sitarganj, Rudrapur Kathgodam, and Haridwar Nagina have improved access for trade and tourism.

Significant projects under the Delhi Dehradun corridor include a nearly 30 km six lane access controlled highway with a tunnel and elevated section costing about INR 1,995 crore. Urban bypasses in Dehradun and Haridwar are expected to ease city traffic, while a 4 km link to Banbasa at the India Nepal border, costing INR 366 crore, will strengthen cross-border connectivity. Roads linking the state to the national expressway network, including Rudrapur Kashipur and Haridwar Delhi, have also been prioritized.

Safety and environmental protection are central to the planning. Measures include black spot rectification, improved signage, wildlife underpasses near reserves, and elevated road sections to reduce ecological impact. Proposed future projects include the Mussoorie Dehradun high-speed corridor, Haridwar Haldwani link, Dehradun Ring Road, and Lalkuan Haldwani athgodam bypass, currently in planning or DPR stages. Civil work on the Silkyara Polgaon tunnel is expected to complete by March 2027.

Union Minister Gadkari assured that all proposals will be reviewed promptly and directed officials to maintain quality and timelines on ongoing and upcoming projects. Senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport, NHAI, and state departments attended the meeting and discussed detailed execution plans.
