Synopsis

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has laid the foundation for the INR 1,670 crore Gangasagar Setu, a four lane bridge spanning nearly 5 km over the Muriganga river. The bridge will connect Kakdwip on the mainland with Kachuberia on Sagar Island, replacing ferry-only travel and reducing travel time for residents, pilgrims, and goods. Larsen & Toubro has been awarded the contract, with completion expected in about two years. Alongside the bridge, the government inaugurated or laid foundation stones for other projects, including tourism and dormitory infrastructure, supporting the region's development and annual pilgrimage.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has officially laid the foundation for the Gangasagar Setu, a four-lane bridge project valued at INR 1,670 crore. Spanning around 4.85 km over the Muriganga river, the bridge will connect Kakdwip on the mainland to Kachuberia on Sagar Island. Currently, the island relies mainly on ferry services, which are affected by tidal conditions and crowding, making transport of people and goods challenging. The new bridge will provide reliable, all-weather road connectivity for residents, pilgrims, and businesses.

The project is aimed at easing travel for locals and the millions of visitors attending the Gangasagar Mela each year. By reducing travel time and dependency on ferries, the bridge will support smoother movement of agricultural products, industrial goods, and emergency services. Improved connectivity is also expected to enhance access to education, healthcare, and other essential services on the island.

Larsen & Toubro has been awarded the construction contract, and officials have indicated that the bridge is expected to be completed within approximately two years. The project documents were exchanged in a formal ceremony attended by state officials. Once completed, the bridge will serve around three lakh residents and substantially improve logistical efficiency for the region.

During the event, Banerjee also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple other state projects, including a 100-bed dormitory and tourism infrastructure on Sagar Island. These projects are part of a broader effort to strengthen civic and tourism facilities, especially in preparation for the annual pilgrimage season, which draws lakhs of devotees.

The state government has previously undertaken several infrastructure initiatives in the region, and the Gangasagar Setu is a continuation of efforts to address long-standing connectivity challenges. Authorities are simultaneously upgrading support infrastructure for visitors, including lodging, water supply, and sanitation, ensuring the island can handle increased footfall efficiently.

The bridge is expected to not only improve transport but also stimulate economic activity by facilitating trade and tourism, creating long-term benefits for the local population and supporting sustainable development on Sagar Island.
