Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has launched a comprehensive ward-wise property survey to improve property tax records and increase revenue collection. The survey started with an initial phase covering three wards and is planned for all 60 city wards. With records showing 2,22,256 properties and around 90,000 yet to be verified, the survey aims to identify unassessed buildings, new constructions, and unregistered units. Revenue officials have prepared the process with discussions on inspection methods and data collection tools to ensure accurate and reliable property information.
Mangaluru City Corporation has started a detailed ward-wise property survey to ensure its property tax records match the actual number of properties across the city. The initiative began with teams surveying Attavar, Hampankatta, and Padavu wards, and the plan is to gradually cover all 60 wards. MCC officials conducted preparatory meetings to finalize survey procedures and inspection methods, aiming for accurate verification and systematic data collection.
MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik said the exercise would help identify discrepancies in existing records and include properties that are unregistered, newly constructed, or previously unassessed. The deputy commissioner (revenue in-charge), Akshatha K, noted that while MCC's official records show 2,22,256 properties, the actual number could be higher, and the survey would help clarify the correct figures.
The first phase is intended to refine survey techniques and address practical challenges before implementing the programme city-wide. Accurate property data will allow MCC to strengthen its tax base, ensure correct assessments, and improve revenue planning. Officials emphasized that the survey would also help close gaps in current revenue collection and support more precise forecasting for future fiscal planning.
MCC's property tax collection for the current fiscal year has reached INR 103.5 crore, against a target of INR 112 crore, leaving around 90,000 properties pending verification. The ongoing survey aims to cover these properties and update the records, ensuring every taxable property is accounted for and properly assessed.
Revenue officials highlighted that accurate property information is crucial not only for tax collection but also for planning urban infrastructure and development projects. The survey is expected to bring greater clarity to property ownership, reduce discrepancies in records, and improve compliance among property owners.
