Synopsis

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is set to create its longest operational corridor after approval was granted for a new underground extension of the Magenta Line. The sanctioned stretch will add 9.9 km and nine stations between Ramakrishna Ashram Marg and Indraprastha. With this addition, the Magenta Line will expand to nearly 76.6 km, overtaking the Pink Line. The extension is expected to strengthen connectivity in Central Delhi and improve interchange access with multiple existing metro lines across the network.

The Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro is poised to become the longest corridor in the system following approval for a new underground extension. The Union Cabinet cleared a 9.9 km stretch from Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, which will add nine new stations to the network. Once completed, the total length of the Magenta Line will reach around 76.6 km, surpassing the Pink Line, which currently holds the longest continuous corridor.

The upcoming section will pass through key central locations, including Central Secretariat, India Gate, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam and Indraprastha. DMRC has indicated that the fully underground alignment is aimed at improving metro access in high-density and administrative areas of Central Delhi, where surface transport options are limited and traffic congestion remains high.

The extension will also significantly enhance interchange connectivity. Central Secretariat will provide transfers to the Yellow and Violet Lines, Shivaji Stadium will connect with the Airport Express Line, while Indraprastha will link the Magenta Line with the Blue Line. These interchanges are expected to reduce travel time and improve route flexibility for daily commuters.

At present, the Magenta Line operates between Botanical Garden and Krishna Park, with construction underway on the Krishna Park Ramakrishna Ashram Marg stretch. The newly approved section will complete a longer continuous corridor linking West Delhi, South Delhi and Central Delhi through a single line.

The project forms part of Delhi Metro's broader Phase IV expansion, under which several new corridors and line extensions are being developed to expand network coverage. Over the years, the Magenta Line has emerged as a critical east-west connector, and the latest approval further strengthens its role within the overall metro system.
