Nagpur Metro's Phase III expansion plans have been finalised to extend connectivity to New Nagpur and the Butibori Industrial Area, aiming to strengthen public transport access for residents and businesses beyond the current network. The proposed extension represents a strategic move to integrate rapidly growing urban and industrial zones into the metro system, enhancing commuter convenience and reducing travel time. Officials said detailed planning is underway to align routes with projected demand, improve last-mile connectivity and support economic development. The Phase III extension is expected to address urban mobility needs, boost regional investment prospects and promote sustainable transportation across the Nagpur metropolitan area.
The Nagpur Metro Phase III expansion has been planned to include new corridors extending services to New Nagpur and the Butibori MIDC industrial zone, signalling a significant broadening of the city's urban rail network. The move reflects a focused effort by authorities to strengthen metropolitan transit infrastructure and improve connectivity for residential, commercial and industrial catchments that are currently underserved by rapid transit.
The extension to New Nagpur aims to link emerging residential areas with the core city, making daily commuting more efficient for a growing commuter base. Planners have indicated that this extension will support the integration of peripheral zones into the metropolitan transport grid, reducing dependence on road-based travel and mitigating traffic congestion.
The proposed link to Butibori MIDC, a major industrial hub near Nagpur, is being designed to meet the mobility needs of the workforce and facilitate seamless access to employment centres. The industrial area generates substantial daily commuter traffic, and enhanced metro connectivity is expected to reduce travel times, improve convenience and boost productivity for employees and businesses alike.
Officials involved in the planning process have highlighted that Phase III will be shaped by comprehensive demand assessments, route optimisation studies and consultations with stakeholders to ensure the extensions align with passenger needs and urban growth projections. There is also a focus on integrating feeder services and last-mile connectivity solutions, such as bus links, shared mobility and pedestrian access, to maximise the utility of the expanded network.
The inclusion of New Nagpur and Butibori demonstrates a broader vision for metro-based urban mobility that supports inclusive development, economic activity and environmental sustainability. By expanding rail services into growth corridors and industrial zones, authorities aim to reduce vehicular emissions, improve travel reliability and attract investment to key metropolitan sectors.
