Synopsis

Jammu and Kashmir Police recently booked seven landlords in Jammu for not completing mandatory tenant verification before allowing tenants to occupy their properties. Five FIRs were registered at Bahu Fort police station and two at Channi Himmat, under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, following District Magistrate directives. The enforcement is part of routine verification efforts, intensified ahead of Republic Day. Authorities also urged landlords to comply with verification rules and highlighted the Kirayedar online portal, launched last December to simplify reporting and improve compliance across the district.

Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken action against seven landlords in Jammu for failing to complete mandatory tenant verification before allowing tenants to occupy their residential premises. The move comes as part of ongoing efforts to ensure strict compliance with guidelines issued by the District Magistrate and heightened security measures ahead of Republic Day.

Five FIRs were registered at Bahu Fort police station under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), while Channi Himmat police station recorded two FIRs for similar violations. Authorities said these actions are part of routine enforcement to ensure landlords adhere to verification protocols.

Police have reminded property owners to fully cooperate with authorities and follow verification procedures to help maintain law and order. Citizens are also encouraged to stay vigilant and assist law enforcement in creating a secure environment during sensitive periods.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police had introduced an online verification platform, Kirayedar, in December last year to address gaps in tenant reporting that persisted despite earlier enforcement drives. The portal allows landlords to register tenants digitally, reducing delays and ensuring compliance without needing frequent visits to police stations. Authorities highlighted that the portal is expected to improve reporting rates and facilitate smooth verification.

The police emphasized that strict adherence to tenant verification norms is essential not only for law and order but also for ensuring public safety. They warned that non-compliance could lead to FIRs and other legal actions. The ongoing drive reflects authorities focus on maintaining proper monitoring of residents in rented properties, especially around major national events.
