The Union Cabinet has approved the widening and strengthening of a key stretch of National Highway 326 in Odisha, a move welcomed by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The project, with an estimated cost of INR 1,526.21 crore, covers the Mohana Koraput section and is expected to improve all-weather connectivity across tribal districts such as Koraput, Rayagada and Gajapati. The upgraded highway will enhance road safety, reduce travel time, and improve links with major national highways, ports and transport hubs, supporting regional mobility and economic activity.
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the widening and strengthening of the Mohana Koraput stretch of National Highway 326 in Odisha, marking a significant infrastructure push for the state's southern and tribal regions. The project involves an investment of INR 1,526.21 crore and is aimed at improving road conditions and connectivity in areas that have long faced access challenges due to terrain and weather-related disruptions.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi acknowledged the Centre's decision and expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for supporting the project. The state government has maintained that the highway upgrade is critical for ensuring dependable all-weather connectivity to interior districts, where road quality has often limited mobility and access to services.
The improved NH-326 corridor is expected to reduce travel time and enhance safety for commuters and freight movement. Officials have indicated that the project will include geometric improvements and corrective measures at accident-prone locations, helping lower road safety risks. Better road conditions are also expected to ease the movement of agricultural produce, goods and essential supplies from remote areas to larger markets.
Once completed, the upgraded stretch will strengthen links with major highways such as NH-26, NH-59 and NH-16, improving access to key transport infrastructure including ports, airports and railway stations in the region. The corridor is also expected to support economic activities by improving connectivity for businesses, traders and service providers operating in southern Odisha.
The highway project follows earlier national efforts to expand and modernise road infrastructure in the state, particularly in underserved regions. Improved connectivity is expected to help residents access healthcare, education and employment opportunities more easily, while also supporting long-term regional development.
