Synopsis

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) recently took enforcement action against property tax defaulters after repeated non-payment notices, sealing several properties across key localities for overdue taxes exceeding INR 18 crore. Officials said the move is part of an ongoing campaign to improve compliance and ensure funds for essential civic services such as roads, water supply and sanitation. The corporation has already collected significant revenue this financial year and expects further growth. Authorities reminded owners that property tax is a key revenue source and urged timely payment to avoid such measures and additional penalties.

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has sealed a series of properties after owners failed to clear outstanding property tax dues totaling more than INR 18 crore despite receiving multiple notices from the civic body. Enforcement teams led by zonal taxation officers carried out the action in localities including Kherki Daula, Mohammadpur Jharsa, Narsinghpur, Pace City-1 and Palam Vihar, where dues on individual properties ranged from several lakhs to over INR 50 lakh.

MCG officials explained that the sealing action is part of a sustained drive to enforce compliance and improve revenue collection for civic services. They said property tax remains a primary source of funding for basic services such as cleanliness, road maintenance, sewer systems and water supply, and that non-payment weakens the corporation's ability to maintain these services.

Authorities reported that the recent enforcement measures resulted in approximately INR 7 crore being deposited into the municipal treasury on the day of the action. They noted that overall property tax collection for the current financial year has reached INR 285 crore, with expectations of further increases as the campaign continues. The corporation has also been using data-driven tools to identify outstanding accounts and assist residents with payment.

Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya emphasised that strict measures are necessary to ensure compliance, though property owners have been repeatedly urged to pay their dues voluntarily. He said the corporation will sustain these efforts in the coming months and encouraged owners to settle outstanding taxes promptly to avoid further penalties or legal action.

Earlier this year, similar actions were taken by the civic body in which properties with long-standing tax defaults were sealed following repeated non-payment of dues, underlining a wider enforcement trend in the city. Independent reports have also indicated a significant volume of property tax arrears in Gurugram, reflecting longstanding compliance challenges faced by the municipal authority.
