Synopsis

Veteran author and voice actor Tom Bodett has reached a settlement with Motel 6, ending a lawsuit over the alleged unauthorised use of his name and voice following the breakdown of their long-standing professional relationship. Bodett, who became synonymous with the brand through its iconic tagline, had accused the motel chain's new ownership of continuing to use his identity after missing a contractual payment and after ties were severed. The settlement, disclosed in a federal court filing, brings closure to a dispute that drew attention due to Bodett's near 40-year association with the brand and his role in shaping its advertising legacy.

Tom Bodett, the longtime voice behind Motel 6 iconic advertising, has settled a lawsuit against the motel chain over the alleged continued use of his name and voice without consent. The agreement ends a legal dispute that followed the collapse of a professional relationship spanning almost four decades.

Bodett had claimed that after a missed annual payment under his contract, he formally ended his association with the brand. Despite this, the motel chain allegedly continued to use his voice and name on its national reservation phone line, prompting legal action on grounds of trademark and contract violations.

Motel 6 had contested the claims, asserting that Bodett himself breached contractual terms, which it argued justified withholding payment. The case, filed earlier in the year, highlighted tensions arising after the brand's ownership transition.

Now 70, Bodett is widely known for his work as an author, voice actor, and public radio contributor, as well as appearances in multiple documentary productions. He became the face and voice of Motel 6 advertising in 1986, famously improvising the tagline that became central to the brand's identity.

While the terms of the settlement have not been disclosed, the resolution formally closes a high-profile chapter in advertising history shaped by one of hospitality's most recognisable voices.
