Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Shri Nityanand Rai inaugurated multi-storied tenements built under the Puducherry Smart City Mission for sanitary workers living near Chinnayapuram hamlet. The housing project was developed to rehabilitate families who were earlier residing in old and dilapidated structures without proper civic amenities. A total of 220 beneficiaries have been allotted homes under this development.


The residential complex comprises six blocks and has been planned with essential infrastructure, including internal roads, drinking water supply, sewerage connections, electricity, and lift facilities. The project is intended to offer safer and more dignified living conditions while ensuring access to basic urban services. Officials said the initiative aligns with the broader objective of the Smart City Mission to upgrade urban housing and improve quality of life for economically vulnerable sections.

As part of the same programme, the minister also inaugurated a mini stadium at Anna Thidal, developed at a cost of INR 17 crore. The facility includes a main playing field, spectator galleries and parking space, and is expected to be used by local residents and nearby educational institutions for sports and community activities.

In addition, compact substations equipped with modern electrical systems were commissioned at an investment of INR 28.20 crore. These substations are expected to improve the reliability of power supply in surrounding areas and support growing residential and commercial demand.

Senior officials of the Union Territory administration, including the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister, were present during the inaugurations, highlighting coordinated efforts between the Centre and the local government in executing urban infrastructure projects.
