Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has intensified measures to improve air quality by conducting an extensive deep-cleaning drive on key arterial roads, including the Sion-Panvel Highway and the MIDC South Central Road. Acting on directions issued during a review meeting chaired by the municipal commissioner, the civic body has focused on removing accumulated dust and soil from roads and footpaths, followed by washing surfaces with treated water. The drive has been implemented across high-traffic corridors and internal city roads through coordinated efforts by the engineering and solid waste management departments. Mechanical sweeping, water spraying and manpower deployment have been used to reduce dust levels and improve ambient air conditions.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has launched an intensified deep-cleaning across major roads to strengthen air quality management in the city. The initiative is being carried out in line with directions issued by the municipal commissioner during a recent review meeting, with a focus on high-traffic corridors such as the Sion-Panvel Highway, the MIDC South Central Road and prominent internal roads and footpaths.

As part of the drive, accumulated soil along road edges and pedestrian areas is being removed, collected and transported away. Roads and footpaths are subsequently washed using treated water to minimise dust resuspension. The operation is being executed through a combination of mechanical equipment and manual workforce.

In accordance with the commissioner's instructions, engineers from the engineering department have been deployed at the field level alongside sanitation officers to oversee on-ground implementation. The deep-cleaning drive was carried out even on Sunday, covering internal arterial roads as well as major stretches of the Sion-Panvel Highway and roads within the MIDC area.

Under the supervision of the city engineer, the engineering department conducted mechanised cleaning on the Sion-Panvel Highway stretch between Vashi and Belapur. The work involved brushing and removing roadside soil, followed by washing the carriageway with treated water. Simultaneously, the opposite carriageway from Belapur to Vashi, including flyover sections, was cleaned by the solid waste management department using a workforce of over 250 sanitation workers.

The operation was monitored by senior civic officials, with sanitation officers, inspectors and field teams participating actively in the drive. Similar deep-cleaning activities were undertaken on the MIDC South Central Road using mechanised methods supported by manpower.

In addition, sanitation teams carried out cleaning on several other key roads, including Ghansoli Palm Beach Road, the main road near Chetak Mithaiwala, the road behind Kamla Market at Ghothivli, and major roads in sectors 10, 11 and 12 of Koparkhairane.

The drive includes the use of mechanical sweeping machines, flipper machines and jetting sprays to clean road surfaces. Treated water is also being sprayed into the air using dedicated vehicles to suppress dust particles and reduce airborne pollution. The municipal corporation stated that such field-level pollution control measures are being implemented rigorously to ensure sustained improvement in air quality across Navi Mumbai.
