The Public Works Department has approved a contract worth about INR 3.7 crore to carry out waterproofing repairs in the Pragati Maidan underpass in central Delhi. The decision follows recurring water seepage issues that have affected the tunnel, prompting concerns over commuter safety and structural integrity. The scope of work includes treating leakage points and ensuring long-term water ingress mitigation. The approval comes after technical evaluation and project estimates were prepared to address persistent moisture problems linked to inadequate original waterproofing. Repair work is expected to improve conditions for motorists and enhance the tunnel's resilience during the monsoon season, according to officials involved in planning.
The Public Works Department has sanctioned a contract valued at approximately INR 3.7 crore to undertake comprehensive waterproofing repairs for the tunnel at Pragati Maidan in central Delhi. The approval aims to resolve ongoing water seepage issues that have been affecting the underpass, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
The tunnel, which forms part of a key traffic corridor in the city, has experienced recurring problems with leakage and moisture ingress. These issues were identified during routine inspections and raised by commuters and transport authorities as concerns for both commuter comfort and structural durability.
The scope of the approved work focuses on treating the points where water ingress is most severe and ensuring that the waterproofing system is enhanced to withstand future weather events. Technical assessments and detailed estimates were prepared to determine the most effective repair methodology for the problem areas.
Officials involved in project planning said that the repair works are expected to significantly improve conditions within the tunnel for motorists, especially during the monsoon season when leakage has historically been most noticeable. Enhanced waterproofing is also intended to reduce long-term maintenance needs and extend the service life of the structure.
The contract approval follows procedural clearance from relevant administrative authorities, and the department will proceed with tendering and execution of the repair work under prescribed standards. Work is expected to begin once contractor selection is completed and necessary preparations are in place.
