BMC takes proactive measures to improve stormwater drainage system to address waterlogging issues

In response to water-logging concerns, the BMC intends to place 25 robust dewatering pumps along the entire 10 km Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) stretch. Triggered by recent water-logging at Marine Drive, a congested drainage outfall due to construction debris led BMC to utilize cranes for clean-up. Subsequently, SWD officials surveyed the coastal road area, prompting the MCRP team to deploy pumps at 25 locations, especially where drainage work is ongoing. This initiative aims to mitigate flooding risks and enhance drainage efficiency in the wake of such incidents.

The deployment of these high-powered dewatering pumps serves a pivotal role in tackling water accumulation problems that often arise during periods of heavy rainfall. These pumps boast an impressive capacity, capable of efficiently channelling out approximately 2,500 cubic meters of water. Notably, strategic sites, including the vicinity of the Taraporwala Aquarium at Charni Road, have been carefully selected for the installation of these pumps.



Moreover, the BMC is undertaking a comprehensive initiative to bolster the efficacy of its existing stormwater drainage systems. Currently operating within a capacity range of 1,000 to 1,200 mm, these drains are slated for expansion, with their capacity increased to a range of 2,000 to 2,500 mm. This enhancement is anticipated to facilitate smoother and more effective water flow, minimizing the risks of flooding and water-logging incidents.



The Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP), an ambitious endeavour valued at Rs 12,213 crore, encompassing a substantial 10.58 km route connecting the iconic Marine Drive in South Mumbai to the renowned Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). Notably more than a mere road, this visionary project integrates an array of pivotal components. Among these are the inclusion of arterial roads, subterranean tunnels, and strategically positioned traffic interchanges. The project's overarching objective is to alleviate the persistent issue of traffic congestion while concurrently enhancing the connectivity of various parts of the city. The undertaking's substantial scope and multifaceted approach reflect a determination to address urban challenges head-on and engender a more fluid and interconnected urban landscape.
