Synopsis

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved four multi-tracking railway projects across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh, costing around INR 24,634 crore. Spanning approximately 894 km, these projects aim to improve passenger and freight movement, connect 3,633 villages with over 85 lakh residents, and support two Aspirational Districts. The developments will enhance operational efficiency, reduce congestion, boost tourism, and strengthen freight transportation, particularly for commodities like coal, cement, and food grains, while supporting environmental sustainability.

The government has given the green light to four multi-tracking railway projects across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh with an investment of roughly INR 24,634 crore. These projects are expected to extend the Indian Railways network by about 894 km, enabling smoother movement of passengers, goods, and services.

The projects include the third and fourth lines between Wardha and Bhusawal covering 314 km in Maharashtra; an 84 km fourth line connecting Gondia and Dongargarh across Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh; a 259 km third and fourth line between Vadodara and Ratlam spanning Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh; and a fourth line covering 84 km from Itarsi to Bhopal and Bina in Madhya Pradesh.

The multi-tracking initiative is set to enhance connectivity for approximately 3,633 villages with a total population of around 85.84 lakh and will benefit two Aspirational Districts, Vidisha and Rajnandgaon. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that increasing line capacity will improve operational efficiency, reduce congestion, and strengthen the reliability of services.

He added that these projects align with the Prime Minister's vision of a New India, aiming to make the region self-reliant through comprehensive development and expanding employment and self-employment opportunities. The projects have been planned under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, focusing on integrated planning, stakeholder consultations, and improving multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency.

Vaishnaw also emphasized the tourism potential, noting that the rail lines will provide access to destinations such as Sanchi, Satpura Tiger Reserve, Bhimbetka rock shelters, Hazara falls, and Nawegaon National Park, likely attracting tourists nationwide.

From a freight perspective, the projects are essential for transporting commodities including coal, containers, cement, fly ash, food grains, and steel. The planned capacity augmentation is expected to handle an additional 78 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight. Vaishnaw further pointed out that expanding railway infrastructure will support environmental goals, reduce logistics costs, cut oil imports by 28 crore litres, and lower CO2 emissions by 139 crore kg equivalent to planting six crore trees.
