Synopsis

Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde, has instructed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to prepare a detailed feasibility report on constructing a tunnel linking Mumbai with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The tunnel would connect key hubs including the Bandra Worli Sea Link and Bandra Kurla Complex, addressing growing traffic congestion and supporting multimodal transport. Shinde also directed an evaluation to integrate the high-speed railway with Mhatardi bullet train station, linking it with Kopar railway and Taloja metro stations to strengthen seamless regional connectivity.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde has asked the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study for a tunnel connecting Mumbai to the Navi Mumbai International Airport. This initiative aims to ease the increasing traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Mumbai and the new airport. The tunnel is expected to link major points such as the Bandra Worli Sea Link and Bandra Kurla Complex with the airport, ensuring smoother travel for passengers and freight.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to handle around 20 million passengers annually and will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With the anticipated rise in vehicular and air traffic, the existing routes are likely to be insufficient, making improved infrastructure essential for both operational efficiency and passenger convenience.

Additionally, Shinde has directed the MMRDA to assess the possibility of integrating the high-speed railway with the Mhatardi bullet train station in Diva, Thane district. This station is planned as an integrated transport hub connecting bullet trains, suburban rail, metro services, buses, and highways, ensuring seamless multimodal travel across the region. The study will also explore links to Kopar railway station and Taloja metro station to enhance connectivity further.
