The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 190 million loan to support the Indore Metro Rail Project, which aims to improve urban mobility, reduce emissions, and promote inclusive growth in Madhya Pradesh. The funds will finance an 8.62 km underground corridor with seven stations, connecting dense city zones to the airport. Designed with universal accessibility, the metro will include ramps, lifts, CCTV, and emergency systems. Expected to cut 12,414 tons of CO2 emissions annually, it will integrate with city buses and feeder networks for seamless connectivity. Implemented by MPMRCL and operational by January 2030, the project also advances transit-oriented development and gender-inclusive participation in transport planning.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 190 million loan to support the Indore Metro Rail Project, aiming to improve urban transport, reduce pollution, and encourage inclusive growth in Madhya Pradesh. The funding will be used to construct an 8.62-kilometer underground metro line with seven stations, linking congested areas of Indore to the airport.
The project is designed with modern amenities and accessibility features, including ramps, lifts, CCTV surveillance, and emergency response systems, ensuring safety and convenience for the elderly, women, children, and persons with disabilities.
The metro line is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 12,414 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually, improving air quality in the city. The project also includes multimodal integration with existing bus and feeder services to provide better connectivity to educational institutions, markets, and transport hubs. A study will be conducted to optimize connections between the metro, airport, railway, and bus systems.
ADB's support extends to planning initiatives for women and girls, including internships and training programs to enhance participation in the transport sector. The bank will also collaborate with existing technical assistance for transit-oriented development (TOD) to improve Indore's TOD planning and policies.
The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) will implement the project, which is expected to become operational by January 2030. This initiative is part of a broader effort to establish sustainable, efficient, and inclusive urban transport infrastructure in one of India's rapidly growing cities.
