Several Metro 6 piers removed as depot alignment is revised for smoother operations

Synopsis

Several piers of the Metro 6 corridor were removed after the depot entry alignment was revised, as MMRDA plans to implement a temporary siding for initial operations by 2026. The depot site is involved in ongoing legal disputes over ownership between the Central government and a private party. MMRDA has awarded a INR 2,269-crore contract to NCC for trains, signalling systems, and platform screen doors. The depot will include stabling lines, workshops, an operations centre, and washing facilities. Once operational, Metro 6 will provide a crucial east-west connection in Mumbai.

Several piers along the Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala) to Vikhroli Metro corridor (Line 6) have been removed following a revision in the depot entry alignment, which made them unnecessary. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is now exploring the use of a temporary sidings facility to enable partial operations by 2026. Temporary sidings are low-speed track sections separate from the main line, used to stable, park, or load trains when the main depot is not yet operational.

The depot site has faced legal disputes, with ownership claims from both the Central government and a private party. The state government is negotiating with the Centre to secure a lease for the salt pan land, but an injunction remains in place as the ownership litigation continues.

Meanwhile, MMRDA has awarded a contract worth INR 2,269 crore to Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC) for the supply of trains, signalling systems, and platform screen doors for the 16-km Lokhandwala-Vikhroli corridor via the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR). The delivery of 18 six-coach rakes is expected to begin in the next two years. Until the full depot is ready, the temporary siding will accommodate a few rakes to start initial operations by 2026.

The corridor will connect Swami Samarth Nagar in Andheri to Vikhroli, crossing both Central and Western Railway tracks. While depot construction is expected to take about 30 months, MMRDA plans to complete critical sections within 24 months to allow trial runs and limited initial services.

The depot will include stabling lines, inspection bays, workshops for minor and major repairs, an operations control centre, and an automatic washing plant. All lines are being designed to handle eight-car trains, with initial stabling capacity for 11 rakes and potential expansion to 13 by 2031.

Kanjurmarg was originally designated in 2020 by the Uddhav Thackeray-led government as an integrated depot for Metro 3 (Aarey-Cuffe Parade) and Metro 6. However, the plan stalled after the Centre challenged ownership, noting that the land falls under the salt commissioner's jurisdiction.

MMRDA officials say the realignment will allow smoother operations and meet operational and safety requirements. Once completed, Metro 6 will serve as a vital east-west link, significantly reducing travel time across Mumbai's central suburbs.
