Synopsis

The Kerala government has sanctioned INR 17.31 crore for the 600-meter HMT-NAD stretch under the second phase of the Seaport-Airport Road project. The Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK) will issue tenders once technical approvals are completed. Land acquisition for this section and the 6.5 km NAD-Mahilalayam stretch is progressing, with compensation for 90% of the 529 landholdings expected soon. Earlier allocations include INR 32.26 crore for the NAD section and INR 569.34 crore from KIIFB for land acquisition, aiming to improve connectivity to Kochi airport and ease traffic congestion.

The Kerala government has cleared INR 17.31 crore for constructing a 600-meter stretch from HMT Road to NAD Junction as part of the Seaport-Airport Road project's second phase. This section, designed with a width of 45 meters, aims to reduce congestion on the Edappally-Aluva-Athani corridor of NH 544, which has faced heavy traffic, especially near the Marthanda Varma bridge in Aluva.

In a review meeting chaired by Industries Minister P Rajeeve, it was decided that RBDCK would move forward with tendering for this stretch as soon as technical approvals are secured. Land values for the HMT section have been deposited in the bank according to the Supreme Court's directives, and the revenue department is completing acquisition procedures. Surveying and marking of the 215 hectares of land in HMT are expected to be finished soon.

Work on the NAD section will also be accelerated. The government had earlier allocated INR 32.26 crore for this segment. Since preliminary sketches are already prepared, no delays are expected in the subsequent steps. Tenders for the widened NAD-Thorappu Road are also expected shortly.

For the 6.5 km stretch from NAD to Mahilalayam, the tender process will start in December. Land acquisition for this section is nearly complete, with KIIFB previously allocating INR 569.34 crore. Compensation for 90% of the 529 landholdings is expected to be completed soon, allowing the tendering process to proceed. District Collector G Priyanka, along with officials from revenue, KIIFB, and RBDCK, participated in these discussions.

The Seaport-Airport Road project spans 25.7 km from Irumpanam near Tripunithura to Kochi airport in Nedumbassery. The first phase of 11.3 km from Irumpanam to Kalamassery was completed in 2003 and handed over to the Public Works Department in 2020.
