The Delhi government has set an eight-month deadline to complete the long-delayed Barapullah Phase-III flyover, which will connect Mayur Vihar-I in East Delhi with AIIMS in South Delhi. Initiated in 2015, the project has faced repeated delays due to land acquisition issues, environmental approvals, flooding, and coordination challenges among departments. With 333 trees cleared, transplanted, or pruned, and remaining construction work underway, the elevated corridor is expected to ease traffic congestion, provide better connectivity, and reduce commute times, benefiting thousands of daily travelers across the city.
The Delhi government has announced an eight-month deadline to complete the long-delayed Barapullah Phase-III flyover project. This elevated corridor aims to connect Mayur Vihar-I in East Delhi with AIIMS in South Delhi, integrating with the existing Barapullah corridor near Sarai Kale Khan. The project is expected to ease traffic congestion and reduce commute times for thousands of daily travelers.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has already initiated work on the project, including site allocation for the fabrication of building components and the floating of tenders for tree removal. The felling and transplantation of trees will be carried out under the supervision of the forest department. A detailed re-survey of trees along the alignment has been conducted, resulting in the identification of 333 trees for removal, transplantation, or retention with light pruning. This clearance was the final pending approval needed to proceed with construction.
The Barapullah Phase-III project was originally initiated in April 2015 with an expected completion date of October 2017. However, various challenges, including land acquisition issues, environmental clearances for tree relocation, flooding, and inter-departmental coordination delays, have caused significant setbacks. The project has faced multiple delays over the years, with earlier deadlines missed due to these obstacles.
Designed with environmental safeguards, the 3.5 km elevated corridor will feature a pier-supported structure and an extradosed bridge to minimize the number of piers in the Yamuna's active flow zone. The flyover will provide three lanes in each direction, eight loops (four each at Sarai Kale Khan and Mayur Vihar), cycle tracks, and footpaths. These features aim to improve connectivity and reduce traffic bottlenecks in the region.
The Barapullah Phase-III flyover is expected to be operational by the end of the year, providing a much-needed solution to the city's traffic challenges. Once completed, it will enhance connectivity between East and South Delhi, benefiting daily commuters and contributing to the city's overall infrastructure development.
