Synopsis

The Uttar Pradesh government has approved INR 1,187 crore for infrastructure development in Varanasi, targeting sewerage and water supply systems. This funding will cover 18 wards, including the recently merged areas of Ramnagar and Sujabad. The projects are designed to enhance sanitation, provide safe drinking water, and improve overall living conditions for over seven lakh residents. Key constituencies benefiting include Varanasi Cantt, City South, City North, and Rohaniya. The phased implementation aims at addressing critical urban infrastructure gaps effectively.

The Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned INR 1,187 crore for the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) to develop sewerage and water supply systems across 18 wards, including the Old City and the newly merged areas of Ramnagar and Sujabad. This move follows the inclusion of these areas into the VMC ahead of recent local body elections.

Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari welcomed the approval, stating that securing funds for essential services had been a continuous effort. He emphasized that the sanctioned budget would enable the implementation of projects designed to improve sanitation and water supply across the affected wards.

Among the approved initiatives, the largest involves laying water supply lines and a sewer network with house connections, totaling INR 292 crore. Additionally, a project worth INR 37 crore has been undertaken for laying drinking water pipelines in the Sujabad Domari area. Other works include the installation of drinking water and sewerage lines in wards such as Shivala, Nagwa, Bagahada, Jangambadi, Bangalitola, Durgakund, Naria, Sarainandan, Jolha North, Bhelupur, Kritivasheshwar, Hukulganj, Naibasti, Shivpurwa, Tulsipur, Birdopur, and Kazipura, with a combined investment of INR 858.63 crore.

These projects are part of the state's broader effort to improve urban living conditions and ensure equitable access to essential services. The initiatives will be completed in phases, with priority given to the most critical areas. On completion, they are expected to significantly contribute to the modernization and overall development of Varanasi's infrastructure.
