President Smt Droupadi Murmu travelled this past week to Mathura and Vrindavan on the Maharajas' Express, which was designated as the "President's Special" for the visit. The 18-coach formation included luxury coaches, restaurants, lounges, and additional AC coaches for staff, with two locomotives assigned for reliability. The itinerary covered prominent temples in Vrindavan and Mathura, and security arrangements were coordinated between Northern and North Central Railway zones. This was the President's second notable train journey, following her earlier trip from Bhubaneswar to Rairangpur in 2023.
The Indian Railways arranged the Maharajas' Express, considered one of its most premium trains, to function as the "President's Special" for President Smt Droupadi Murmu's one-day visit to Mathura and Vrindavan during the past week. The train, usually operated as a tourist service in the winter months, was specially assigned for the journey between Safdarjung railway station in New Delhi and Vrindavan Road station near Mathura.
The rake consisted of 18 coaches in total. Twelve of these were part of the Maharajas' Express itself, featuring a Presidential suite, deluxe suites, restaurant coaches, lounge areas, and two power cars. Alongside these, two standard AC coaches were attached for senior railway officials, with the remaining balance made up by essential service coaches. To ensure uninterrupted operations, the Railways deployed two locomotives, keeping one in use and the other on standby as a precaution in case of technical problems.
The train was scheduled to leave Safdarjung at around 8 AM and reach Vrindavan Road by about 10 AM. Once in Vrindavan, the President's programme included darshan and pooja at several significant shrines such as Shri Banke Bihari Temple, Nidhivan, Kubja Krishan Mandir, and Sudama Kuti. Her visit also extended to Shri Krishna Janmsthan in Mathura. Following the day's engagements, the return journey was arranged in the evening from near Mathura Junction.
Extensive instructions were given to ensure safe and smooth running of the train. Senior railway staff, station masters, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) were deployed along the route. Northern Railway and North Central Railway, under whose jurisdiction the route falls, were asked to maintain constant coordination to manage the operations effectively.
This was not the first time President Murmu travelled on a specially arranged train. In June 2023, she had undertaken a journey from Bhubaneswar to her hometown Rairangpur in Odisha, also arranged by Indian Railways. The use of the Maharajas' Express for her recent visit added a new dimension, given the train's reputation as a high-end luxury service for tourists.
