The Union Cabinet has approved a four-lane NH-139W project in Bihar, connecting Sahebganj, Areraj, and Bettiah over 78.942 km at a cost of INR 3,822.31 crore under HAM. Designed to enhance connectivity across northern Bihar districts and improve freight and passenger movement, the project will link key economic, social, and tourism nodes, including heritage and Buddhist sites. It aims to reduce travel time, provide high-speed routes, and boost regional economic development. Employment generation, both direct and indirect, is projected to be substantial.
The Union Cabinet recently approved the construction of a four-lane section of the NH-139W, spanning 78.942 km between Sahebganj, Areraj, and Bettiah in Bihar. The project, planned under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), is estimated to cost INR 3,822.31 crore. This greenfield highway is expected to enhance connectivity between Patna and Bettiah, linking northern Bihar districts such as Vaishali, Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, and West Champaran, extending up to regions along the Indo-Nepal border.
An official statement highlighted that the project aims to improve the movement of long-distance freight traffic, facilitate access to key infrastructure, and promote regional economic development by connecting agricultural zones, industrial hubs, and cross-border trade routes. It will also link seven PM Gati Shakti economic nodes, six social nodes, eight logistic nodes, and nine major tourism and religious centers, including notable heritage and Buddhist sites such as Kesariya Buddha Stupa in Sahebganj, Someshwarnath Mandir in Areraj, Jain Mandir and Vishwa Shanti Stupa in Vaishali, and Mahavir Temple in Patna, enhancing Bihar's international tourism prospects.
The highway is designed to provide high-speed connectivity as an alternative to the currently congested and geometrically deficient routes passing through built-up areas. It will connect with major national highways including NH-31, NH-722, NH-727, NH-27, and NH-227A. The alignment is expected to support an average vehicular speed of 80 km/h, with a design speed of 100 km/h, reducing travel time between Sahebganj and Bettiah from around 2.5 hours to just one hour.
The project is anticipated to generate approximately 14.22 lakh man-days of direct employment and 17.69 lakh man-days of indirect employment. Additionally, it is expected to create further job opportunities by stimulating economic activity along the corridor.
