Synopsis

A 91-kilometre road connecting Hanle to Chumar in Ladakh has recently been opened for public use. Built by Project Himank under the Border Roads Organisation, the road passes through altitudes of 14,500 to 17,200 feet, including the high Salsa La Pass. The project is designed to strengthen strategic connectivity for the Armed Forces while improving local access and boosting tourism. The road links key sites such as Hanle Observatory, Kyun Tso Lake, Chilling Tso Lake, and extends to Tso Moriri, offering safer and more reliable travel in this remote region.

A 91-kilometre road connecting Hanle to Chumar in Ladakh has been completed and opened for public use. The project was undertaken by Project Himank of the Border Roads Organisation and passes through extreme high-altitude terrain, ranging from 14,500 feet to 17,200 feet, including the Salsa La Pass. The road improves strategic access for the Armed Forces stationed along the borders and also facilitates local connectivity and tourism in the region.

The route connects several important locations, including the Hanle Observatory, Kyun Tso Lake, Chilling Tso Lake, and extends further toward Tso Moriri. By linking these sites, the road not only enhances operational readiness in the border areas but also provides better opportunities for tourism and local economic growth in Ladakh.

In parallel, the Border Roads Organisation is developing a 130-kilometre alternative route to the Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO) military outpost in eastern Ladakh. This road passes through Sasoma in the Nubra Valley, Saser Brangsa, and Gapshan before reaching DBO. The route is designed to remain less visible from Chinese surveillance, providing the Indian military with a secure and efficient corridor for personnel and equipment in sensitive forward areas along the Line of Actual Control.

The Hanle-Chumar road, along with other infrastructure initiatives like the Sasoma-DBO project, reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen strategic connectivity and operational capability while supporting tourism and socio-economic development in Ladakh.
