Synopsis

Indian Railways is rolling out a new Vande Metro service linking Secunderabad and Muzaffarpur through Patna and Gaya. The service is aimed as migrant workers from Bihar living in Hyderabad often struggle to secure seats on long-distance trains. With an equal number of general and sleeper class coaches, the train promises better affordability and accessibility. The move is part of South Central Railway's broader plan to expand low-fare regional connectivity. Companies and daily wage earners are expected to benefit as the new route reduces dependency on the limited weekly express service.

The Indian Railways has announced plans to operate a Vande Metro service between Secunderabad and Muzaffarpur in Bihar. The route will run through Patna and Gaya and is part of the first phase of South Central Railway's expansion plan.

The service is expected to help thousands of migrant workers from Bihar who live and work in Hyderabad. At present, only a weekly express train connects the two cities, forcing most passengers to depend on connecting trains through Patna or Kolkata. Demand for tickets often exceeds supply, with long waiting lists during festive seasons.

Unlike other long-distance trains, this Vande Metro will have an equal split between sleeper and general coaches, a feature aimed at giving flexibility to passengers who need affordable and last-minute travel options. Rail officials have indicated that the new service is designed to support both regular workers and families visiting home, making the journey more accessible.

The train will stop at major stations along the corridor including Kazipet, Bellampalli, Sirpur Kagaznagar, Balharshah, Nagpur, Raipur, Bilaspur, Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Hatia, Ranchi, Bokaro, Gaya and Patna before reaching Muzaffarpur. These halts connect key industrial and mining towns, providing more travel choices for workers in multiple sectors.

The Vande Metro is part of Indian Railways' new strategy to introduce medium-distance trains that complement the Vande Bharat Express. Unlike the premium model, Vande Metro trains are being planned for affordable travel, with shorter headways and a higher number of trips each day. While exact fares and frequency for the Secunderabad-Muzaffarpur service have not yet been disclosed, earlier plans for Vande Metro suggest operations could be several times a day, catering to commuters and long-distance passengers alike.

This initiative also ties in with the government's broader push to strengthen regional mobility. Migrant workers from states like Bihar and Jharkhand form a large part of Hyderabad's workforce in construction, services, and manufacturing. Improved train services are expected to cut travel time, reduce overcrowding on existing trains, and improve convenience for this group.

The South Central Railway has been adding routes connecting Telangana with Kerala, Assam, and now Bihar to meet the rising demand for affordable mobility. With Vande Metro, the focus is shifting to providing frequent, low-fare services alongside existing express and superfast trains.
