Synopsis

The Kanpur Metro project has reached a key milestone with the completion of the up-line tunnel connecting Kanpur Central to Naubasta via Jhakarkati and Transport Nagar. The 'Azad' Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) finished the 950-metre tunnel, including a technically challenging 70-metre stretch beneath railway tracks. Meanwhile, the 'Vidyarthi' TBM is nearing completion of the down-line tunnel. This progress is part of the broader development of Corridor-1's underground section, following earlier tunnelling of 1.25 km between Kanpur Central and Nayaganj, enhancing the city's metro connectivity.

The Kanpur Metro project has made substantial progress with the completion of the up-line tunnel linking Kanpur Central to Naubasta, passing through Jhakarkati and Transport Nagar stations. The 950-metre tunnel was completed by the 'Azad' Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), which successfully navigated a 70-metre section beneath active railway tracks a challenging portion requiring precise coordination. Track laying and system installation are set to follow in this tunnel.

In parallel, the 'Vidyarthi' TBM is in the final stages of constructing the down-line tunnel in the same section. Both TBMs had previously completed 1.25 km of tunnelling between Kanpur Central and Nayaganj before being relaunched near Swadeshi Cotton Mill for the 2.40 km underground stretch towards Kanpur Central. During this work, a specialised 'Dragging Method' was employed to move the machines efficiently between station ends.

Passenger services are already operational between the McRobertganj ramp and Kanpur Central, while tunnelling continues on the 2.40 km stretch from Kanpur Central to the Swadeshi Cotton Mill ramp. These developments are integral to improving urban transportation infrastructure and ensuring seamless metro connectivity across the city.
