NTPC's 3,300 MW Barh Super Thermal Power Project in Bihar is set to be fully operational, with Unit-3 of Stage-I (660 MW) starting commercial operations early next week. This final unit completes both Stage-I and Stage-II of the five-unit project, each with 660 MW capacity. With this addition, NTPC's total operational capacity will reach 60,978 MW standalone and 82,080 MW consolidated. The Barh project has been a key part of NTPC's expansion in eastern India, supporting rising regional power demand. Its completion marks a major milestone in strengthening India's energy infrastructure and enhancing NTPC's role in national power generation.
State-owned power utility NTPC has announced that its 3,300 MW Barh Super Thermal Power Project in Bihar is set to become fully operational as the final unit-Unit-3 of Stage-I-will begin commercial operations early next week. This unit, with a capacity of 660 MW, marks the completion of the project's commercial commissioning under both Stage-I and Stage-II. Advertisement
The Barh project comprises five generating units, each of 660 MW capacity. Under Stage-I, three units were developed, and two were developed under Stage-II. Units 1 and 2 under Stage-I were brought online in November 2021 and July 2023, respectively. Earlier, the two units under Stage-II-Unit-4 and Unit-5-had been commissioned in November 2014 and February 2016.
As per NTPC's latest regulatory disclosure, Unit-3 of Stage-I will be formally declared commercially operational starting the beginning of next week. Once operational, this addition will elevate NTPC's installed and commercially operational capacity to 60,978 MW on a standalone basis and 82,080 MW on a consolidated group basis.
The Barh project, situated in Bihar, was originally sanctioned with a total capacity of 3,300 MW, broken down into three units of 660 MW in Stage-I and two units of 660 MW in Stage-II. This project has been central to NTPC's capacity augmentation efforts in eastern India, aiming to meet growing energy demand in the region and beyond.
The project's completion is a strategic boost for power generation in eastern India and underscores NTPC's commitment to infrastructure execution on a large scale. As energy demands surge across the country, this milestone positions NTPC to better address regional deficits while advancing towards national energy goals with a robust, diversified capacity base.
