Frustrated homebuyers from the stalled Amrapali housing projects staged a protest last weekend against NBCC, the government-backed firm assigned by the Supreme Court to complete the unfinished developments. The protestors allege that their allotted flats were unjustly withdrawn over delayed payments and then handed over to private developers at discounted rates-without due process or a chance to explain their circumstances. Feeling betrayed, the buyers are now urging the Supreme Court to investigate these claims, reigniting concerns around fairness and transparency in one of India's most high-profile stalled housing crises. A detailed hearing is expected soon.
Homebuyers from the stalled Amrapali housing projects staged a protest over the past weekend, directly targeting a government-backed construction company. The property owners allege that their long-awaited flats were unfairly taken away, sparking a new wave of discontent. They are now demanding intervention in the nation's highest court.
The protest specifically names the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC). This company was tasked by the Supreme Court to complete the various stalled Amrapali housing projects and had purchased additional development rights to help fund the work by selling new units. However, homebuyers claim their properties were withdrawn due to what NBCC cited as delayed payments.
They allege that subsequently, newly built apartments were handed over to private developers at discounted rates, purportedly without giving the original buyers an opportunity to present their side of the story. The aggrieved buyers express feeling deeply cheated and suspect corruption, stating that their aspirations of finally securing their dream homes, which had been rekindled following the Supreme Court's direct intervention in the Amrapali crisis, have now been dashed.
Consequently, the homebuyers have approached the Supreme Court again, seeking a thorough and impartial investigation into these serious allegations during the upcoming hearing. The Amrapali Group's long-standing financial crisis has impacted thousands of homebuyers for years, becoming a prominent example of the challenges in resolving major stalled real estate projects across India.
