Construction and demolition waste cause several problems when not disposed of in an effective manner. In this case, it has greatly contributed to overall air pollution levels of the city while encroaching upon public property. Piles of construction waste can be found on some stretches of the southern bank of Vaigai River. Many developers are said to be dumping waste in to the Sellur Tank as well, thereby drastically reducing the available tank space.
According to insiders, a tender to create a construction and demolition waste processing centre in Madurai is in the works. The tender is likely to be issued in the coming two months. Experts believe the creation of such facilities will also help boost the corporation’s annual revenue, thus tackling two birds with one stone.
