Uber has launched metro ticketing on its app in partnership with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), commencing with Delhi Metro. The initiative is part of a broader plan to integrate public transport systems with digital platforms, enhancing urban mobility. Uber also plans to roll out B2B Logistics via the ONDC network, allowing businesses to access on-demand logistics without managing their own fleet. This development follows an MoU signed during Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's visit to India in 2024, emphasising the company's commitment to expanding India's digital public goods infrastructure.
Ride-hailing giant Uber has introduced metro ticketing through its app in collaboration with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), commencing with Delhi Metro earlier this week. Uber stated that three additional cities across India are set to adopt this integration in 2025. Furthermore, the company announced its intention to launch B2B Logistics via the ONDC network, a move that will enable businesses to access on-demand logistics through Uber's delivery network without maintaining their own fleet.
This initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2024 during Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's visit to India. During the visit, Khosrowshahi underscored Uber's commitment to supporting the expansion of India's digital public infrastructure. The company described the metro ticketing launch as a significant step towards realising its goal of making public transport systems more interconnected and accessible.
Uber's Chief Technology Officer Praveen Neppalli Naga commended India's efforts in building large-scale digital infrastructure through platforms like ONDC. He highlighted that integrating metro ticketing within the Uber app aligns with the company's broader vision of serving as a comprehensive mobility platform. Vibhor Jain, Acting CEO and COO at ONDC, noted that Uber's participation in the ONDC network is a crucial milestone in creating a more connected and interoperable digital infrastructure across the country.
Effective immediately, Uber users in Delhi can plan their metro journeys, purchase QR-based tickets, and access real-time transit updates directly via the Uber app, thus enhancing the convenience and accessibility of public transport.
By aligning its services with ONDC, Uber not only taps into India's expansive digital infrastructure but also positions itself as a pivotal player in the evolving mobility and logistics landscape in the country.
