To meet the rising demand for urban transport, the Indian Railways has launched surveys to expand suburban railway networks in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The Central and Western Railway zones will see new lines, including one connecting Khandeshwar to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and another from Dahanu to Vadhavan Port. These projects aim to separate long-distance and local trains, reduce congestion, and improve access to new economic zones. The plan is part of a broader effort to support the region's rapid growth and integrate major infrastructure projects like NMIA and the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Palghar district.
The Union Railway Ministry has instructed the Central and Western Railway zones to carry out detailed surveys and feasibility studies for expanding the suburban rail network in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The move is in response to increasing population, traffic, and infrastructure development in Mumbai's extended metropolitan area.
Among the key projects being considered is a new 4-km suburban rail line connecting Khandeshwar to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), which is currently under construction. This line is expected to serve as a vital link between Mumbai city and the airport, offering faster and more affordable access for daily commuters and air travelers alike.
Another major project on the Western Railway side is a survey for a new corridor from Dahanu to Vadhavan Port in Palghar. Vadhavan is set to become India's largest port, and connecting it via suburban rail will support freight movement and the development of nearby logistics hubs.
The Central Railway has also proposed extending the Kalyan-Asangaon suburban corridor by 32 km to improve connectivity in the Thane-Nashik belt. The extension, expected to cost INR 1,150 crore, will help ease congestion on the existing tracks and enable more efficient movement of long-distance and suburban trains. Additionally, work is already underway to build a third line from Panvel to Roha, improving connectivity on the Konkan route.
Officials say these new rail links are necessary to keep up with MMR's growth. As new airports, ports, and industrial zones are developed, demand for daily transportation is growing rapidly. The expansion of the suburban rail network is seen as one of the most efficient solutions to reduce road traffic and make commuting faster and safer.
This is also the first time that rail planners are considering direct suburban rail connections to an international airport. If successful, this model could be applied to other urban regions in India where transport integration is becoming a challenge.
