The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will now open by August 2025 instead of the previously expected July date, according to an aviation advisory issued to pilots. The delay is reportedly due to the runway strip not being fully commissioned yet. Meanwhile, a panel has unanimously agreed to retain all historical flight slots at Mumbai Airport for the upcoming winter season, avoiding any disruption for airlines. This decision clears confusion among international carriers about slot availability. The move also ensures a smoother transition between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports when NMIA becomes operational later this year.
The opening of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has been officially delayed until August 2025, as per a notice to airmen (NOTAM) issued recently. The delay is linked to ongoing work on the airport's runway strip, which has not yet been commissioned. Until it is fully ready, the runway cannot support operational flight movements.
Originally scheduled to start commercial operations by mid-2025, NMIA's new timeline has been reflected in aviation advisories for airlines and pilots. The delay comes even as other infrastructure components-such as taxiways, aprons, parking bays, and cargo terminals-are nearing completion.
In the meantime, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and the newly formed Slot Coordination Committee (established May 8) have unanimously decided to retain all historical flight slots at the existing Mumbai airport (CSMIA) for the 2025 winter schedule. This includes slots used by both domestic and international carriers, particularly those that had previously faced uncertainty due to the expected shift to NMIA.
The slot retention decision follows a period of confusion when Mumbai airport authorities had indicated that some airline slots post-August 2025 would be cancelled to accommodate the expected operational load transfer to NMIA. That announcement led to pushback from global airline groups, including the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The slot committee's new ruling means airlines will now maintain their scheduled flights from Mumbai for the winter, ensuring no disruption during a critical travel season. Airlines welcomed the decision, noting it allows them to plan international schedules without concern over last-minute slot changes.
In addition, freighter operations from Mumbai-particularly 45 all-cargo flights per week-have also been secured, helping avoid any disruption in logistics and cargo deliveries during the transition period.
With Mumbai's airport handling over 5.5 crore passengers annually, the aviation ministry and airport operators are working to ensure the phased rollout of NMIA without affecting existing operations. Once NMIA becomes fully functional, a fresh round of slot redistribution and traffic management between the two airports will follow.
