The ongoing redevelopment of Tilak Bridge in Mumbai's Dadar area has caused major traffic congestion, frustrating thousands of daily commuters. As the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carries out the phased construction of a new parallel bridge, the existing structure remains a bottleneck. Local residents and transport experts say the situation has worsened due to encroachments, narrow lanes, and poor planning. With Phase 1 now underway, the old bridge will be demolished only after the new one is operational. The complete project is expected to finish by 2026. Meanwhile, commuting through this busy area remains a daily challenge for many.
Mumbai's Dadar is facing severe traffic snarls due to the delayed reconstruction of the Tilak Bridge, one of the city's busiest road over bridges. Originally built in 2019, the bridge was added to the BMC's list of 40 critical road bridges that need reconstruction due to structural and traffic concerns. The new plan includes building a parallel bridge first, before demolishing the old one.
Work on the new structure began in 2022 under the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), but progress has been slow. As of now, the foundation work is complete and pier construction is underway. The INR 375 crore project will be delivered in two phases. In Phase 1, a three-lane bridge is being built parallel to the existing one and is expected to be ready by late 2025. Once this is operational, Phase 2 will begin-where the older bridge will be demolished and rebuilt.
However, local residents say the delays are causing daily traffic nightmares. The old bridge was already narrow and is now further choked as vehicles from all sides are being funneled into the under-construction zone. Experts say that encroachments and lack of traffic management near key spots like NGC Nagar and Plaza Cinema are making things worse. On one side, illegal hawkers and vegetable vendors have taken over the road, leaving little space for pedestrians and vehicles. On the other side, a residential tower is built too close to the road, creating a major bottleneck.
To deal with the expected rise in traffic, the final design of the new Tilak Bridge will have three lanes in each direction, compared to the current 2+2 lane structure. The bridge is also being shifted slightly to align better with new road layouts and nearby buildings.
Public transport users and private motorists alike are facing the brunt of the delay. Activists say the lack of interim solutions has made things worse. They estimate that travel time for commuters who use Tilak Bridge regularly could increase by at least 30 minutes once demolition work starts in full swing.
The BMC has lined up over 20 bridge projects across the city, and Tilak Bridge is one of the most critical due to its central location and the volume of traffic it handles daily. The Madh Versova Bridge is expected to be the next major project to be taken up. But for now, Dadar residents will have to live with more congestion before things get better.
