The first trial run of Metro Line-9, a crucial metro corridor connecting Mira-Bhayander to Mumbai's western and eastern suburbs as well as the international airport, commenced earlier this week. The initiative marks a significant milestone as Thane district witnesses the launch of its first metro service. The trial run was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Shri Eknath Shinde and Shri Ajit Pawar, along with other key officials. The 4.4 km corridor from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon features four stations and is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution, while facilitating seamless connectivity to Mumbai's key transport hubs. The Metro Line-9 project is part of the larger Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) initiative to establish a comprehensive metro network across the region.
As Thane district prepares to see its first metro service, the first trial run of Metro Line-9 was formally launched earlier this week, marking a significant milestone. The trial run was flagged off by Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Shri Eknath Shinde and Shri Ajit Pawar, alongside other senior officials. The event also witnessed the participation of Pratap Sarnaik, Transport Minister, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, Niranjan Davkhare, MLC, Narendra Mehta, MLA from Mira-Bhayander, Manisha Chaudhary, MLA from Dahisar, and Gopal Shetty, former MP. Additionally, MMRDA officials including Vikram Kumar, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner-1, Rubal Agarwal, Managing Director of MMMOCL, and Radha Binod Sharma, Commissioner and Administrator of Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation, were also present.
Metro Line-9 is a 4.4 km double-decker corridor from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon, encompassing four stations - Dahisar (East), Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon. The project is notable for being the first of its kind in Mumbai to integrate a metro line and a flyover within the same structure.
The metro corridor is expected to significantly enhance connectivity for Mira-Bhayander residents by providing direct links to prominent locations, including CSMIA International Airport through Line 7 and 7A, Andheri West via Line 2B, and Ghatkopar through Lines 1 and 7. Additionally, Link Road will be accessible through Line 2A, while future connectivity plans aim to link Thane via Line 10 and Vasai-Virar through Line 13.
According to the Chief Minister, the ongoing technical tests for the project are crucial in ensuring its operational readiness. He stated that the metro line would play a pivotal role in decongesting traffic on the Western Express Highway, adding that it is the first instance in which a metro line and flyover have been constructed as part of the same infrastructure. He further highlighted the state government's ambitious plan to expand metro connectivity by 50 km this year, 62 km the following year, and 60 km in the third year, with the goal of achieving rapid metro network expansion by 2027.
Deputy Chief Shri Minister Eknath Shinde emphasised that the metro network's expansion to Virar will facilitate direct connectivity for Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts, reducing vehicular traffic and curbing pollution levels in the metropolitan region. He noted that the MMRDA is spearheading the development of a 337 km metro network, aiming to open 50-60 km annually.
Deputy Chief Minister Shri Ajit Pawar remarked that Metro Line-9 will be especially beneficial for daily commuters, as it offers faster travel across long distances and enhanced interconnectivity, contributing to overall economic growth in the region.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, stated that Metro Line-9 is a crucial link that will integrate Mira-Bhayander with the larger Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), connecting key corridors like Metro 2A, 7, 1, and the upcoming Lines 10 and 13. He added that the project is aligned with MMRDA's vision of achieving 'Minutes to Mumbai' - a concept aimed at enabling quicker transit across the region.
The trial run not only represents a technical test but also signifies a new era in public transportation for Mira-Bhayander and the entire MMR, focusing on sustainable, accessible, and inclusive transit solutions.
With the state government's expansive metro development plan aiming to operationalise extensive corridors by 2027, the Metro Line-9 project is set to serve as a crucial link for daily commuters, enabling faster and more convenient transit across key suburban areas. The success of this project could potentially set the precedent for future metro infrastructure in the state, establishing a model for sustainable and commuter-friendly transport systems.
