The Union Minister for Power, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, recently stated that the Centre has urged state governments to examine the feasibility of setting up nuclear power plants in their respective areas and submit proposals. This was discussed during a review meeting with Goa's Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and other state officials, where the future energy needs of the state were also addressed. Khattar highlighted Goa's current lack of thermal, hydro, and solar power plants and indicated that nuclear energy could be a viable option. In addition to this, Khattar mentioned several government initiatives aimed at enhancing Goa's infrastructure.
Earlier this week, Union Minister for Power, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, revealed that the Centre has instructed all state governments to assess the feasibility of establishing nuclear power plants in their regions and to submit proposals accordingly. This initiative is part of a larger effort to boost India's energy generation capacity, with the ultimate goal of increasing nuclear power generation from the current 8 gigawatts to 100 gigawatts by 2047.
The prospect of setting up a nuclear power plant in Goa was one of the main topics discussed during a review meeting held in Panaji, which included Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Naik, Goa Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, and Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane. Khattar highlighted that while Goa does not have any thermal, hydro, or solar power plants at present, the Centre is open to considering nuclear power generation in the state if feasible locations are identified.
Khattar noted that the Centre aims to significantly expand its nuclear energy capacity, explaining that India currently generates 8 gigawatts of nuclear power and is targeting a substantial increase to 100 gigawatts by 2047. He suggested that the expansion of nuclear energy could help meet growing electricity demands across the country. Regarding Goa's energy landscape, Khattar pointed out the absence of thermal, hydro, and solar power plants, making nuclear power a potential option to address the state's future energy needs. He stressed that if Goa were to propose a nuclear power plant in the future, the proposal would be viewed positively by the Centre.
During the meeting, various other issues were discussed, including the achievements and challenges faced by the state's power and urban development sectors. Khattar praised Goa's performance, particularly in comparison to other states, stating that Goa is outperforming many regions in these sectors.
While Goa currently enjoys a reliable 24/7 power supply, Khattar emphasized that it is essential to plan for future demand. In light of this, the Union government is considering a sanction of INR 652 crore to ensure uninterrupted water supply across the state.
Khattar also outlined several key initiatives to support Goa's infrastructure development. The Union government is set to assist the state in procuring 50 electric buses to improve urban mobility and sustainability. Additionally, INR 113 crore will be allocated to the state for the establishment of sewerage treatment plants at three locations under the Swachh Bharat scheme.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, acknowledging Khattar's guidance on various sectors, expressed gratitude for the support the state has received from the Narendra Modi-led government. He also highlighted that the state is already benefiting from the Centre's assistance and praised the ongoing implementation of various development initiatives. Furthermore, the implementation of the PM Awas Yojana in Goa was discussed, reflecting the government's commitment to enhancing the state's housing and infrastructure.
Goa's strong performance in urban development and energy sectors was acknowledged, and Khattar confirmed continued support from the Centre, with several significant projects underway. This meeting serves as a reminder of the collaborative efforts needed to ensure sustainable growth in Goa, with a focus on energy diversification and infrastructure development.
