The Adani Group has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to jointly develop hydropower projects totalling 5,000 MW in the neighbouring country. The agreement was signed in Thimphu by senior officials from both entities in the presence of Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and other dignitaries. This partnership builds on the existing Wangchhu Hydropower Project, where DGPC holds a majority 51 per cent stake and Adani owns 49 per cent. The initiative will encompass additional hydropower and pumped storage projects to be implemented in phases.
Adani Group, led by Gautam Adani, has entered into a strategic agreement with Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower projects in Bhutan. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Thimphu by DGPC's Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin and Adani Green Hydro Ltd's COO (PSP & Hydro) Naresh Telgu in the presence of Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Lyonpo Gem Tshering, and other high-ranking officials.
According to the statement issued by Adani Group, the agreement aligns with the ongoing Wangchhu Hydropower Project, in which DGPC retains a majority 51 per cent stake while Adani holds 49 per cent. The broader 5,000 MW initiative will include additional hydropower and pumped storage projects, which will be identified, studied, and implemented in stages.
Naresh Telgu, COO (PSP & Hydro), Adani Green Hydro Ltd, remarked that the partnership underscores the company's commitment to advancing clean energy infrastructure and enhancing regional energy security. He indicated that the initiative would enable Bhutan to leverage its hydropower resources and export reliable green energy to India, showcasing the potential for cross-border cooperation in sustainable development.
DGPC's Managing Director, Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, emphasised that the strategic partnership with Adani would further consolidate Bhutan's ties with India in the hydropower sector. He described the agreement as a vital step in harnessing Bhutan's hydropower resources, which form a key component of the two nations' long-standing bilateral relations.
Adani Group, headquartered in Ahmedabad, operates across diverse sectors, including logistics, power generation, renewable energy, infrastructure, and consumer finance. DGPC, Bhutan's foremost hydropower developer, has decades of experience in managing the country's renewable energy assets, positioning it as a critical player in the region's green energy landscape.
The partnership also reflects the broader strategic alignment between India and Bhutan in the renewable energy domain, building upon past projects such as the Wangchhu Hydropower Project. As the implementation progresses in phases, it will be crucial to observe how both entities navigate regulatory frameworks, resource management, and infrastructural challenges in this ambitious endeavour.
