Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) has announced its partnership with United Way Mumbai to conduct daily beach clean-ups and waste management activities across Mumbai. The collaboration, revealed earlier this week, focuses on tackling waste accumulation at Mahim Reti Bunder and Mahim Causeway through the deployment of Safai Sathis, who carry out systematic clean-up operations.
According to Gaurav Pokhariyal, Executive Vice President - Human Resources at IHCL, the company aims to address current environmental challenges while laying the foundation for a sustainable future through such strategic initiatives. The waste collected during these clean-up drives is subsequently cleaned, segregated, and dispatched to a Material Recovery Centre (MRC) for recycling and co-processing, thereby mitigating landfill congestion.
Since the project's inception in October 2024, the initiative has successfully gathered 1,12,097.37 kgs of waste, which has been meticulously processed at the MRC. The programme is scheduled to run until March 2025, ensuring that waste management efforts are sustained over the months.
George Aikara, Chief Executive Officer of United Way Mumbai, stated that their efforts are geared towards fortifying local waste management systems and fostering community awareness. He further conveyed that the partnership with IHCL combines resources with tangible on-ground actions, reinforcing responsible waste management as an enduring practice.
By integrating corporate resources with community-driven initiatives, the project not only aids in reducing waste accumulation at Mumbai's beaches but also emphasises the importance of responsible waste management as a long-term objective. As the initiative progresses until March 2025, its impact may serve as a model for similar collaborations aiming to create cleaner, more sustainable urban environments.
