Synopsis

The Maharashtra government has approved an extensive development package worth INR 4,820 crore to upgrade major religious sites across the state. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Tourism, will include infrastructural enhancements at well-known temples such as the Tuljabhavani Temple in Osmanabad and the Sai Baba Temple in Shirdi. The plan aims to improve facilities and boost tourism, with the announcement made soon after a state delegation visited Ayodhya to study the Uttar Pradesh temple tourism model. The decision also appears aligned with the upcoming Kumbh Mela preparations in Nashik.

The Maharashtra government has greenlit an ambitious plan to invest INR 4,820 crore in the development and modernisation of prominent religious destinations throughout the state. This move, spearheaded by the state's Ministry of Tourism, is expected to enhance infrastructure and accessibility at these spiritually significant locations.

Officials indicated that the religious tourism initiative will cover sites such as Tuljabhavani Temple in Osmanabad, Sai Baba Temple in Shirdi, and the Mahalaxmi Temple in Kolhapur. Among the key projects is the proposed allocation of INR 445 crore towards the Sri Kshetra Mahur temple dedicated to Goddess Renuka in Nanded, along with improvements at the Vitthal Temple in Pandharpur and the Shri Ram Temple in Shahapur, Thane district.

According to government sources, the revamp also includes INR 5,603 crore for improving roads and civic amenities to ease access to these sites. Authorities stated that the effort would ensure that religious hubs are prepared to accommodate higher footfall, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons.

The announcement came shortly after a delegation of state ministers and officials visited Ayodhya to examine how the Uttar Pradesh government has boosted tourism via religious development. The study was reportedly aimed at replicating successful strategies in Maharashtra.

The timing of this initiative also appears strategic, with Nashik set to host the upcoming Kumbh Mela. The funding package is expected to address long-standing infrastructure gaps and align Maharashtra with national efforts to promote religious tourism.
